Retail POS software is the system your cashiers, store managers and head office rely on every hour: it takes payments, updates stock, applies promotions and produces VAT-ready invoices. For retailers in Dubai, the wider UAE and the GCC, the right POS and inventory platform is also the foundation for e-commerce, loyalty and AI-driven forecasting.
Choosing one is harder than it looks. Subscription tools are quick to start but can struggle with multiple branches, local payment methods and integrations; custom platforms fit your operations exactly but need the right partner. This buyer’s guide explains what to look for, which rules to plan for and how to roll out without disrupting trade.
This guide covers:
- the core features every retail POS system needs
- UAE VAT and the new e-invoicing requirements
- omnichannel selling, loyalty and self-checkout
- integrations with ERP, accounting and payments
- off-the-shelf versus custom retail software
- a rollout plan that keeps your stores trading
What retail POS software should do in 2026
Modern retail POS software is far more than a till. At a minimum, look for:
- Fast, reliable checkout. Barcode scanning, split payments, promotions, returns and exchanges, with the ability to keep selling offline and sync when the connection returns.
- Real-time inventory. Stock by branch and warehouse, transfers, purchase orders, batch and expiry tracking, and barcode or RFID stock counts.
- Central control. Head office sets products, prices and promotions once and publishes them to every branch, with role-based access for managers and cashiers.
- Customer profiles. Purchase history, loyalty points and marketing consent, shared between stores and online.
- Reporting. Live sales, margin and stock dashboards by branch, category and staff member.
Features to prioritise by retail format
| Retail format | Features to prioritise |
|---|---|
| Supermarkets and hypermarkets | Weighing scales, fresh and expiry tracking, high-volume lanes, self-checkout and multi-branch replenishment |
| Fashion and lifestyle | Size and colour variants, seasonal collections, loyalty and returns across store and online |
| Electronics | Serial and warranty tracking, instalment and buy-now-pay-later payments, rich product content online |
| Pharmacies and specialty retail | Batch and expiry tracking, rules for regulated products and supplier-specific pricing |
UAE VAT and e-invoicing: what your POS must handle
UAE VAT is charged at 5% on most goods and services, so your POS must calculate VAT correctly on every line, handle zero-rated and exempt items, and issue tax invoices and credit notes that meet Federal Tax Authority requirements.
E-invoicing is the next change. Under Ministerial Decisions No. 243 and No. 244 of 2025, the UAE is introducing a national electronic invoicing system in phases: a voluntary pilot began in July 2026, businesses with annual revenue of AED 50 million or more must comply from 1 January 2027, and other businesses from 1 July 2027. Sales to consumers are currently outside its scope, but B2B sales, such as wholesale, corporate and trade accounts, are in scope, with invoices exchanged through accredited service providers.
If you also trade in Saudi Arabia, your POS must support ZATCA e-invoicing (FATOORA) as well. Deadlines and technical requirements change, so confirm the current rules with the Ministry of Finance, the Federal Tax Authority and your tax advisor. Questions to ask any POS provider:
- Can the system produce structured e-invoices in the required format for B2B sales?
- Is it connected to an accredited service provider, or ready to be?
- Can it handle credit notes, returns and VAT reporting across branches?
Omnichannel retail, loyalty and self-checkout
Customers in the UAE move between malls, websites, delivery apps and WhatsApp. Your retail software should treat them as one customer and your stock as one pool:
- Click and collect, and ship from store, with stock reserved at the nearest branch the moment an order is placed.
- Marketplace and delivery app integrations, so prices and availability stay in sync everywhere you sell.
- Loyalty across channels, with points, tiers and offers that work in store and online, and campaigns over WhatsApp, SMS and email with customer consent.
- Self-checkout and kiosks that shorten queues at busy times and connect directly to POS and inventory. Our kiosk machines are built for exactly this.
- AI demand forecasting that suggests replenishment from sales trends, seasonality and peak periods such as Ramadan, Eid and the Dubai Shopping Festival.
Integrations: ERP, accounting and payments
Retail software rarely works alone. Plan these integrations from the start:
| System | What should flow |
|---|---|
| ERP or accounting | Sales, purchases, stock valuation, VAT and payments, without double entry |
| Payment terminals and gateways | Card, contactless, digital wallets and buy-now-pay-later, reconciled automatically |
| E-commerce and marketplaces | Products, prices, stock and orders, in both directions |
| CRM and marketing | Customer profiles, consent and campaign results |
| Suppliers | Purchase orders, deliveries and supplier invoices |
If you already run an ERP, the POS should feed it rather than replace it. If you don’t, a retail platform with ERP modules for purchasing, finance and HR can grow with your business.
Off-the-shelf or custom retail software?
| Factor | Subscription POS | Custom retail platform |
|---|---|---|
| Time to start | Days to weeks | Weeks to months, usually phased |
| Fit with your processes | You adapt to the product | Built around your workflows |
| Branches and franchises | Depends on the plan | Designed for your structure |
| Integrations | Limited to available connectors | Any system with an API or integration route |
| Costs over time | Per-store or per-user fees that grow with you | Build cost upfront, then support, without per-store licence fees |
| Data ownership | Held in the vendor’s platform | Under your control |
A subscription POS suits a single store with standard needs. Custom retail software makes sense when you run several branches or formats, need specific integrations or payment methods, or want to own your platform and data. Many retailers combine both: a proven core with custom modules where they compete.
A POS rollout plan that keeps your stores trading
- Map how you sell today. Document checkout, returns, stock movements and reporting for each format and branch.
- Clean your product data. Barcodes, variants, prices and opening stock are the most common causes of launch-day problems.
- Pilot in one branch. Run the new POS in a single store, with training and on-site support, before rolling out further.
- Roll out in waves. Move branches in groups, and avoid peak seasons such as Ramadan and year-end sales.
- Add channels and AI. Once POS and inventory are stable, add e-commerce, loyalty, kiosks and forecasting.
How to choose a retail software company in Dubai
Ask every potential retail software partner these questions:
- Have you built POS or inventory systems for our retail format?
- How does the POS work offline, and how is data synced afterwards?
- Is the system ready for UAE e-invoicing and our VAT reporting?
- Which payment providers and ERP systems can you integrate with?
- Who owns the code and data, and what does support look like after launch?
How AlphaTech builds retail software
AlphaTech Enterprises is headquartered in Dubai, UAE, with a back office in India. We build retail software and POS solutions for supermarkets, fashion, electronics and specialty retailers: point of sale, inventory, e-commerce, loyalty, self-service kiosks and AI-driven retail analytics, connected to your ERP and payment providers.
Many retailers start with POS and inventory in one location, then add branches, e-commerce, loyalty or kiosks in later phases. Our guide to enterprise AI agents shows how AI can then answer order questions and suggest replenishment on top of that data.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best POS system for retail in the UAE?
The best POS system depends on your retail format, number of branches and integrations. Look for offline selling, real-time multi-branch inventory, UAE VAT support, readiness for e-invoicing and integrations with your payment providers and ERP.
Does my POS need to support UAE e-invoicing?
Sales to consumers are currently outside the scope of the UAE electronic invoicing system, but B2B sales are in scope. Businesses with annual revenue of AED 50 million or more must comply from 1 January 2027 and others from 1 July 2027, so check that your POS can produce compliant e-invoices for B2B sales.
Can a POS system work without internet?
A well-designed POS keeps selling offline and syncs sales and stock automatically when the connection returns, so branches never stop trading.
How much does retail POS software cost in the UAE?
Subscription POS tools usually charge per store or per user each month, while custom retail platforms have a build cost followed by support. The right choice depends on your number of branches, integrations and how long you plan to use the system.
Can retail software integrate with our ERP and accounting system?
Yes, where your system offers APIs or an integration route. Sales, purchases, stock and payments can flow into your ERP or accounting platform automatically.
